Alonzo Berumen captured second place at the Merrillville semi-state, allowing him to qualify for state.

With the state tournament for wrestling approaching an end, the best of the best have begun to be weeded out. We are fortunate enough to have a wrestler of our own competing in the state finals this weekend. Senior Alonzo Berumen finally made it to the state finals after 4 years of hard work. Berumen wrestles in the 195-pound weight class. After finishing second in the sectional and third in the regional, Berumen turned it on. He defeated the 3rd ranked wrestler in the state, followed by another win over South Bend Clay to seal his second place finish at the Merrillville semi-state. He wrestled long-time foe Jacob Ricks of Benton Central in the finals and unfortunately came up short.

By earning the second-place finish, Alonzo secured a spot among the top 16 wrestlers in the state. His first match was on Friday night. After earning a top eight finish by winning with the score 11-4, Alonzo was able to have the honor to wrestle in the finals on Saturday. After an unfortunate 11-10 loss to the 2nd ranked wrestler in the state, Alonzo fell winless on the day, ending up in 8th place. His record for the season was 36-10.
