Delphi wrestling continues traditions

Over the years, the DCHS wrestling team has been one of the most outstanding sport teams in the area. Led by coach Mike Atwood the team has displayed great work ethic and has created a winning tradition.
The Delphi wrestling team has been a team to fear in the past years. They have been to the state championships twice as a team and have won conference nearly every year for the last ten years. The team has sent wrestlers to the state championship almost every year. Two of these wrestlers include Tanner Lynde and Braden Atwood. Both athletes are now wrestling for the Purdue Boilermakers. Tanner won state last year, while Braden received a second place finish in 2010. Tanner was one of very few wrestlers to achieve an undefeated season.
The current team has entered a rebuilding stage after losing its strong group of seniors last year. “We are much stronger than I thought we were,” said Bryer Houston, DCHS wrestler.

Despite their losses, the team still has some very strong wrestlers who are working harder than ever to make this season a success. Alonzo Berumen, DCHS senior student and wrestler, is one of the key components of the team this year. Alonzo is a very strong wrestler and he has the will to beat nearly any opponent he faces.

Even with the team down, they are a force to be reckoned with. Coach Atwood pushes them to their breaking point every day in practice. Then, he pushes them some more. The sheer intensity of the practice is enough to deter some of the most strong-willed athletes, but the ones that remain are made to be champions. The work ethic of the team is on a whole other level from most sports. If you go to a practice and watch, you see people going as hard as they possibly can every moment they are on the mat. They have reached a point where they are mentally and physically tough enough to be more successful than their opponents. This is why the consecutively win meets and are able to go beyond their sectional.
The team is building as a whole. There are multiple underclassmen with considerable talent that will aid the team greatly in the near future. They are hoping to maintain the current work ethic and retain the drive that pushes them toward victory.
