Cinco De Mayo

The 4th of May has come and gone, and now May 5th has arrived. This is not just any regular day though; it is more popular in Mexico, but May 5th is Cinco De Mayo. Many people do not quite know why this day is celebrated. May 5th is celebrated because in 1862 the Mexican Army defeated the French in the Battle of Puebla. This historic battle was fought during the Franco-Mexican War that started in 1861 and ended in 1867.

The traditions are also a big thing in the US. People with hispanic heritage will make traditional dinners and have parties with prominent colors of the Mexican flag. Businesses will promote Mexican goods such as foods, drinks, and even music. People also remember or pay respect to people of Mexican- Americans who have achieved fame. Many traditions have risen from this holiday and here is a list of a few things that are found to be traditional.

  1. Parades through the town of Puebla
  2. Vendors selling traditional Mexican foods
  3. Reenactment of the Battle of Puebla
  4. Cinco De Mayo parties
  5. Annual Skydiving event (only in Vancouver, Canada)
